An important aspect of many of the organisations you may come in contact with while in London is that they not only provide service, but also give comfort. Your embassy, whose invitation to help celebrate a national holiday that back home you never gave much thought to, may pull on patriotic strings you didn't even know were there to be played. And the church at the top of your village's high street may offer occasional sanctuary in a world sometimes more difficult to comprehend than you ever imagined it could be.
Just as important, though, is that many of these organisations whose focus is volunteerism and public service will let you share some of yourself with your newly adopted home, however temporarily it may be so. They will give you an opportunity to show that you are not just here to live, but to care. They will give you the opportunity, too, to make the new friends who, no matter how long you end up staying, will ultimately be what you remember most about London.
